Duquesne Incline

Trip ideas while visiting Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania

Duquesne Incline

Since the 1870s, the Duquesne Incline has been operating as one of two uphill trolleys, transporting visitors up Mount Washington. Although it faced challenges in the past, the Duquesne Incline underwent a thoughtful restoration in 1963. Now, you might wonder why you should choose to visit this particular trolley instead of the Monongahela one.

At Mount Washington, you’ll find a wonderful spot overlooking the convergence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers. A spacious viewing platform extends just beyond the cliff, offering breathtaking views and perfect opportunities for stunning photographs. While many visitors recommend visiting during the day, as the panorama is truly remarkable, some suggest waiting until nightfall to ride the incline. At that time, it’s less crowded, and you can witness the city below beautifully illuminated. Once you reach the top, apart from enjoying the view, you can explore a small museum showcasing interesting facts about Pittsburgh’s history and browse through captivating photographs. Additionally, there’s a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs. Near the upper station, you’ll also find a few restaurants; however, travelers mention they can be quite expensive. It might be a better idea to return downtown for a more affordable dining experience.
