Lamar Valley, situated in the peaceful northeastern part of Yellowstone, is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. Its location along the Lamar River has earned it the nickname “America’s Serengeti” due to the large number of animals found here. While bison are the most commonly observed species, visitors may also have the chance to see grizzly bears, badgers, bald eagles, and wolf packs, which were reintroduced to Yellowstone in 1995. Although closed temporarily in 2022 due to a road wash-out, Lamar Valley is now accessible again via the Northeast Entrance Road and Beartooth Pass from Red Lodge, Montana. Along the route, there are several lookout points that provide fantastic views. If you’re an avid hiker looking for a more up-close experience, you might want to consider trekking the Lamar Valley Trail, which is a round trip spanning 7.1 miles.
