A place like no other near Zion National Park in Utah
Atop Mount Baldy, at an elevation of 6,521 feet, hikers who conquer the Observation Point trail will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Zion Canyon. This trail offers a bird’s-eye perspective and allows you to admire most of Zion’s major attractions. However, it’s important to note that this 8-mile round-trip hike involves ascending 2,148 feet and requires some stamina. While the East Rim Trail to Observation Point is temporarily closed due to a rock fall, there’s an alternative option available. Hikers can explore the East Mesa Trail outside the park, which is a 7-mile in-and-out route with a 702-foot elevation gain. The trailhead for this alternate route is situated approximately 10 miles north of the park’s east entrance.
To have a more enjoyable hiking experience, many travelers suggest starting the trail early in the morning. This way, you can avoid the scorching heat later in the day. It’s important to pace yourself during the challenging uphill hike and the return descent. It is recommended to take breaks and not rush through it. Don’t forget to pack enough snacks to keep your energy levels up throughout the approximately six-hour hike, according to the National Park Service. Additionally, remember to apply sunscreen and carry an ample supply of water, especially because you’ll be exposed to direct sunlight during parts of the trek.
