San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

San Antonio’s historic missions, including Mission San José, Mission Concepción, Mission Espada, and Mission San Juan, can be found here, making it a must-visit place for history enthusiasts. These missions were established by Franciscan friars along the San Antonio River in the 18th century. They serve as a testament to Spain’s successful spread of Catholicism in the Southwest and Mexico. Each mission has its own unique beauty, such as the well-preserved frescoes at Mission Concepción and the Romanesque arches of Mission San Juan. The missions are located about 3 miles apart from one another.

Make the most of your visit to the park by joining one of the complimentary tours led by knowledgeable park rangers. Many visitors have found these tours to be incredibly informative and enriching. Alternatively, you can explore the Mission Trail on foot or bicycle (there are also roads available for those driving) and discover how the friars coexisted with Native Americans. As you venture along the trail, you’ll come across various remnants of granaries, workshops, and water mills that provide insights into their way of life.
