The Menil Collection

Originally from France, John and Dominique de Menil fled to Houston during World War II. They embarked on a remarkable journey as art collectors, amassing an impressive collection of approximately 19,000 artworks. Today, this renowned collection is housed in the Menil Collection, spanning 30 acres. Comprising a main gallery space and four additional exhibition areas, the collection represents diverse regions and historical eras. From Africa, the Pacific Islands, and the Americas (with a focus on the Pacific Northwest), to Byzantine and Medieval art, the Menil Collection offers a captivating exploration of art from around the world.

Among its vast collection, the museum features a remarkable array of modern and contemporary art. This collection was curated by the de Menils, who started acquiring these artworks shortly after their arrival in Houston. Noteworthy pieces by renowned artists such as Georges Seurat and Pablo Picasso can be found here. Emphasizing surrealism, the museum proudly displays creations from Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, and Joan Miró.
