Trip ideas while visiting Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee
Gaps, also called notches or passes, are the lower areas in a mountain ridge. One such gap is known as Newfound Gap, located at an elevation of 5,046 feet. It is the park’s lowest pass that can be driven through. A scenic route called Newfound Gap, also known as U.S. Route 441, stretches for approximately 30 miles through the park. It starts from the Sugarlands Visitor Center near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, crosses over the mountains, and reaches Cherokee, North Carolina. Throughout this route, you’ll come across mile markers that indicate various interesting attractions, including Newfound Gap, Mingus Mill, the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and Mountain Farm Museum, and the Smokemont Campground and Nature Trail.
The road along this route offers breathtaking mountain views and plenty of opportunities for taking photos. However, be aware that the road can sometimes be narrow and winding, so drive with caution.
