When to Visit

The perfect time for a visit to Gatlinburg is from September to October. These months offer the best experiences in this charming destination. Gatlinburg has two peak seasons: summer (June, July, and August) and October when the fall foliage is at its most beautiful. Among these seasons, July is the busiest month of summer, while October weekends attract the largest number of visitors in the fall. During summer, the temperature rises to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s usually less humid compared to nearby areas due to the city’s high elevation. Note that the elevation also leads to rapid weather changes, so it’s advisable to pack layers regardless of when you plan your visit. The fall foliage starts appearing in mid-September at higher elevations. With pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and off-season rates, September becomes an excellent month to explore Gatlinburg. In October, as the foliage reaches its vibrant peak, the city gets packed with visitors, causing traffic delays, especially during holiday weekends. On the other hand, Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort attracts skiing enthusiasts during the winter months. Early spring (March to May) is considered the low season in Gatlinburg. If you visit in April or May, you’ll witness the blooming of spring wildflowers, adding more beauty to your trip.
