Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

Stretching across 40 miles of the Delaware River, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a vast protected space covering approximately 67,000 acres. Outdoor enthusiasts have ample opportunities to explore over 100 miles of hiking trails, including a 27-mile section of the famous Appalachian Trail. In addition to hiking, visitors can enjoy picturesque drives through the area. The Delaware River provides a playground for motorboat enthusiasts, anglers, kayakers, and swimmers. During the winter months, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities in the recreation area.

For those who love hiking, past visitors highly recommend trying out the Red Dot Trail on Mount Tammany. This trail can be combined with the Blue Blaze Trail to form a loop, allowing you to experience a variety of terrains and scenery. While the Red Dot Trail is known for being steep and rocky, don’t let that discourage you! The entire loop is only 3 miles long, making it a manageable and rewarding adventure.

If you decide to give it a go, we suggest taking the Red Dot Trail up and then descending via the Blue Blaze Trail. This way, you can tackle the more challenging part first and enjoy a slightly easier descent. Plus, this route offers fantastic views along the way, which will surely meet your expectations for stunning autumn colors in the region.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness the impressive fall foliage found in the recreation areas surrounding Mount Tammany. Many recent adventurers have been amazed by the vibrant hues of the autumn leaves, and we’re confident that you’ll be just as delighted. Lace up your boots, grab your backpack, and get ready for an unforgettable hiking experience!
