Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai

Trip ideas while visiting Portland in Oregon

Pip’s Original Doughnuts & Chai

On Fremont Street, there’s a charming cafe called Pip, named after the character Pip from Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations.” It has become a go-to spot in Portland for doughnut enthusiasts and those who love homemade chai. Despite their small size, you can order these delightful doughnuts in quantities of four, six, eight, or even 12. The classic flavors like cinnamon sugar, raw honey and sea salt, Nutella, and candied bacon maple are always a hit. However, make sure not to miss out on the seasonal flavors, especially during the summer months when they feature local berries and peaches.

A doughnut shop called Pip’s was started by Jamie and Nate Snell ten years ago. They used their life savings to fund the shop, but faced difficulties in getting a $10,000 loan from banks. In their time of need, they turned to their friends and family for assistance, and that’s how the name “Pip’s” came about. Jamie and Nate poured their hearts into the venture, with Nate handling general contracting and Jamie taking charge of the design and painting the cloud-themed walls. As a delightful touch specific to Portland, customers can enjoy a dozen free doughnuts on their birthdays.
