Wright Brothers National Memorial

A place like no other near Outer Banks in North Carolina

Wright Brothers National Memorial

The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, came to Outer Banks in the early 1900s from Ohio. They chose this place because of its consistent winds, which were perfect for their aviation experiments. After years of trying, they successfully made the first flight in Kill Devil Hills on December 17, 1903. To commemorate this momentous event, there is now a 60-foot monument shaped like an airplane tail. Travelers can explore the brothers’ lives by visiting their restored hangar and home, as well as the Wright Brothers Visitor Center. This center showcases exhibits that tell the story of their lives in Outer Banks and the challenges they faced before achieving their historic first flight.

Reviewers who have recently traveled to this site highly recommend it as a must-visit destination. They suggest taking a guided ranger tour, which they found informative and enjoyable.
