Bodie Island Lighthouse

Situated south of Nags Head on Bodie Island is a lighthouse that has been rebuilt three times. Initially, it fell because of subpar construction, the second version was destroyed during the Civil War, and the most recent rendition underwent renovation in 2013. Even today, this lighthouse serves as a functional beacon and its light can be observed up to 19 miles away from the shore. Previous visitors have praised this lighthouse as one of the finest in the area. They recommend taking a moment to visit the small museum and gift shop on the lower level. Additionally, they were delighted with the historical insights shared by the park rangers.

With an entrance fee of $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and children aged 11 and below, you have the opportunity to explore a magnificent lighthouse that stands 156 feet tall. The visiting hours differ depending on the season, so it’s essential to check beforehand. If you’re considering ascending to the lighthouse’s apex, make sure to wear suitable shoes. You’ll need to climb 200 steps, which is equivalent to scaling a 10-story building. Just bear in mind that there’s only one handrail to assist you along the way.
