New Mexico Museum of Art

The New Mexico Museum of Art, the oldest art museum in the state, has been open since 1917. It is located in a traditional adobe building and houses over 20,000 artworks from American and European artists. The collection includes drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, textiles, and other unique displays. Alongside its permanent collection, the museum regularly hosts rotating exhibits. Noteworthy past exhibits have explored themes such as the influence of lowrider cars in “Con Cariño: Artists Inspired by Lowriders,” various techniques used with glass in “The Nature of Glass,” and artistic interpretations of the Penitente Brotherhood in “Picturing Passion: Artists Interpret the Penitente Brotherhood.” In 2023, a new annex called Vladem Contemporary will open in the Railyard District, focusing on contemporary art.

The museum received positive feedback from recent visitors who enjoyed the diverse range of artwork. Some even preferred this museum over the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Many patrons expressed their appreciation for the changing exhibitions and mentioned that they frequently revisit the museum to discover new pieces on display. Additionally, visitors suggested exploring the outdoor sculpture gardens and courtyard for a delightful experience.
