Winter Island Park

Salem, despite being situated along the Salem Harbor, is not famous for its beaches. But if you’re willing to explore beyond the usual, you’ll discover the picturesque Winter Island Park. This hidden treasure is located on a peninsula called Salem Neck, about 2 miles northeast of downtown Salem. Winter Island Park holds a rich history—it was once home to Fort Pickering, a military fort from the 17th century. Later on, it served as a U.S. Coast Guard base from 1933 to 1970. While parts of the historic fort remain, Winter Island now primarily serves as a camping and beach destination.

Winter Island’s Waikiki Beach has received glowing reviews from recent travelers. Visitors have described it as a serene destination, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the sunset against the backdrop of Fort Pickering lighthouse. While the beach itself is highly regarded, some visitors have expressed concerns about the upkeep of the no-frills campsites. Winter Island offers various facilities to enhance the experience, such as a public boat ramp, a camping store, designated dinghy rack spaces, and even a function hall.
