Flying Horses Carousel, Oak Bluffs

The Flying Horses Carousel, constructed in 1876, holds the title of being the oldest operating platform carousel in the United States. Its charming red barn houses a collection of hand-painted horses that have been meticulously preserved over the years. These magnificent creatures still boast their original horse-hair manes and tails, captivating both children and those young at heart. Riding this carousel is an absolute delight! Moreover, riders can participate in an exciting game called the brass ring game. As you ride by the metal ring dispenser, make sure to collect as many rings as possible. There are two dispensers available—one within reach of the outer row and another for the inner row. If luck is on your side and you manage to catch the elusive brass ring, you earn yourself a free ride!

If you’re traveling recently, especially with children, many people suggest making a stop at this place. However, be ready for long queues, especially in the summer. Even if you don’t plan to ride the carousel, it’s worth stopping by just to experience the fascinating history, as per feedback from recent visitors.
