Chappaquiddick

Chappaquiddick gained a notorious reputation due to a tragic incident that unfolded in July 1969. Senator Ted Kennedy was behind the wheel, offering a ride to a young woman named Mary Jo Kopechne after a party in Chappaquiddick. Unfortunately, their vehicle veered off the Dike Bridge, resulting in Kopechne’s untimely demise. Remarkably, Senator Kennedy managed to survive the accident.

Chappaquiddick Island has much more to offer beyond its politically charged tragedy. The island boasts rugged beaches with wild waves and stretches of scenic trails, both for vehicles and pedestrians. One of the main attractions is the 14-acre Japanese garden called Mytoi. Another highlight is the Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge, a nesting ground for various shorebirds native to New England. To fully experience the refuge, you can join a guided jeep tour led by naturalists from the Trustees of the Reservation. Additionally, the reservation provides daily tours for exploring Cape Poge Lighthouse, kayaking, and enjoying the seaside from Memorial Day until Columbus Day (mid-October).
