Smithsonian Environmental Research Center

The Smithsonian Environment Research Center, situated approximately 25 miles from Washington, D.C. and around 10 miles southwest of Annapolis, is often associated with the group of museums bearing the name “Smithsonian.” However, it boasts its own unique identity and purpose. Spanning across a sprawling 2,650-acre campus, the center comprises diverse ecosystems including forests, wetlands, marshes, and 15 miles of protected shoreline. Its primary function is to serve as a dedicated site for ecological research conducted by scientists.

The center is not just a research lab; it also welcomes the public. You can explore three main hiking trails at the center: the Java History Trail, Discovery Trail, and Contee Farm Trail. These trails are looped paths ranging from 1.2 to 2.5 miles, and they offer a moderately easy hiking experience. As you walk along these trails, you’ll learn about the significance of the environment. Keep an eye out for a diverse range of animals and plants thriving in their natural habitats.
