Sand Beach

Trip ideas while visiting Acadia National Park in Maine

Sand Beach

The most popular beach in Acadia National Park is Sand Beach, known for its stunning views. Despite the cool waters and sharp shells, people are drawn to this approximately 900-foot-long shoreline. Nestled between tall walls of pink granite and surrounded by beautiful evergreen trees, it’s a truly remarkable place. While enjoying the scenic vistas from the beach itself is wonderful, you can enhance your experience by taking the Great Head Trail. Starting at the eastern end of the beach, this trail offers ascending granite steps that lead up from the cliffs’ base. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the beach and the chance to see The Beehive, a mountain that attracts experienced hikers.

If you want to go to Sand Beach, you can take Park Loop Road and find the beach near the east entrance pay station. There’s a parking lot close to the beach’s changing rooms if you prefer to drive. Another option is to use the free Island Explorer shuttle service that stops at the beach regularly, making it convenient for transportation. It’s important to remember that Sand Beach is open from mid-April to December because of its location off Park Loop Road, so you can enjoy this beautiful destination during the appropriate season.
