Cadillac Mountain

Enjoy it while visiting Acadia National Park in Maine

Cadillac Mountain

Cadillac Mountain is an impressive peak, standing at approximately 1,530 feet. It holds the distinction of being the highest mountain in the park and the tallest one along the North Atlantic seaboard. To fully appreciate its grandeur, you have two options: hiking up the Cadillac Summit Loop Trail or driving up the 3 1/2-mile narrow access road. It’s best to start your adventure early to avoid large crowds, as Cadillac is the only attraction in the park accessible by car. If you choose to drive, remember to maintain a slow pace, especially when the roadside cliffs become steeper. Along the way, there are several small observation areas where you can enjoy the picturesque views before reaching the summit, which tends to be a popular gathering spot for both tourists and buses.

Be sure to set your alarm clock and witness something truly amazing: a sunrise at Cadillac Mountain. From early October to early March, this mountain is the first place in the United States to welcome the sun’s rays each day, and it’s an awe-inspiring sight that visitors rave about. However, keep in mind that it’s a popular spot, even in the early morning hours, so expect crowds. Some people recommend arriving at least two hours before sunrise to secure a good spot. If you’re visiting during the winter months, please note that the access road is closed, and you’ll have to hike the Cadillac Summit Loop Trail instead. Don’t forget to bring blankets and hold on to your hats, as the temperature drops as you climb, making it quite chilly.
