Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

Enjoy it while visiting Acadia National Park in Maine

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

Escape the crowds and behold a breathtaking sunrise at Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. This charming lighthouse, built in the late 1800s, is considered one of Maine’s most picturesque landmarks. Managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, it proudly stands as the only lighthouse on Mount Desert Island. Although entry to the lighthouse itself is limited, you can still marvel at its stunning beauty from the outside.

At the southern tip of Mount Desert Island lies a viewing platform for the lighthouse. It’s quite easy to reach and there’s a free parking lot off Lighthouse Road in Bass Harbor. From there, you can follow a short and sloped trail that leads down to sea level. Just keep in mind that the path can be steep, and the stones on the platform might be slippery, so if you have limited mobility, it’s important to be cautious. People who have been there before have been absolutely amazed by the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets visible from this spot. And that’s not all! The platform also provides a fantastic vantage point to see dolphins and seals up close, making it an even more exciting experience. But remember, during the busy summer months, the drive to the lighthouse can get pretty congested. To avoid any delays, it’s a good idea to arrive early or take advantage of the Island Explorer, a convenient shuttle that drops passengers off just half a mile away from the lighthouse.
