Located in the picturesque Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park, the Pipiwai Trail is a beloved hiking route on the Road to Hana in Maui. This enchanting trail spans approximately 4 miles round-trip and treats hikers to an array of natural marvels. As you traverse this trail, you’ll venture across footbridges and boardwalks amidst vibrant tropical vegetation, a mesmerizing bamboo forest, and two captivating waterfalls: Makahiku Falls and the majestic 400-foot Waimoku Falls. Additionally, you’ll encounter the renowned ‘Ohe’o Stream Gulch, affectionately known as the “Seven Sacred Pools.” The Pipiwai Trail offers a moderately challenging experience with an elevation gain of 800 feet, usually taking around three hours to complete.
The trail on this journey has been described as incredibly beautiful by recent travelers. They were particularly enamored with the stunning waterfalls and the peaceful atmosphere of the bamboo forest. However, it’s important to note that despite the picturesque scenery, the hike itself is not an easy one, as cautioned by reviewers. Some travelers even shared their experience of being informed by National Park Service rangers that the parking gate is locked at the end of the day, irrespective of whether cars are still present inside. To ensure a safe hike, it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes, especially considering that certain parts of the trail can become slippery after rainfall.
