Makena Beach State Park

Makena Beach State Park, situated approximately 5 miles south of Wailea, is considered one of the largest undeveloped beaches on Maui, according to Hawaii’s tourism board. It offers an ideal destination for travelers seeking unspoiled shorelines. As you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a vast expanse of white sand, with minimal commercial establishments such as hotels, shops, and restaurants in the vicinity.

Makena Beach State Park, spanning 165 acres, is home to two beautiful beaches and a dormant cinder cone called Pu’u Olai. Big Beach, also known as Oneloa Beach, stretches for 1.5 miles and spans 100 feet in width. In contrast, Little Beach has 660 feet of sandy shoreline. While nudity is not allowed on state park beaches, the rules are more relaxed at Little Beach, where you may come across sunbathers without tops. Keep in mind that Little Beach doesn’t have lifeguards or amenities like Big Beach does. To move from one beach to the other, visitors can follow a small trail on the volcanic land mass that separates the shorelines. It only takes about five minutes to walk between the two, according to recent visitors. Both beaches are surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and offer scenic views of Molokini and Kaho’olawe.
