The waves during winter at Ho’okipa Beach are incredibly white and frothy, attracting dedicated surfers and windsurfers who are drawn to the thrill of riding waves as high as 30 feet. Although the water is too rough for swimming, many visitors come here to witness the local surfers in action. If you’re traveling along the Road to Hana, make sure to make a stop at Mile 9 to catch a glimpse of the surfing scene on this magnificent stretch of coastline near Pa’ia in Upcountry Maui. It’s advisable for experienced surfers to have a local guide accompany them.

Some travelers who recently visited the place recommended making a stop there, even if you’re not a fan of water sports. They mentioned that the beach offers great photo opportunities that are worth seeing. Additionally, this beach serves as a habitat for sea turtles, which can be spotted blending in with the lava rocks. While swimming was not recommended, wading in the water is enjoyable, especially around the tidepools. It is suggested to grab some food from the eateries nearby and find a bench to sit on while observing the activities happening around you.
