Shipwreck Beach

Visiting Shipwreck Beach, also called Kaiolohia, requires some effort, but it’s worth it for the incredible photo opportunities. Located on the northeastern coast of the island, this captivating destination is home to two deliberately grounded World War II ships. One of the main attractions is the YOGN-42, a fuel barge that can be seen from the shores of Kaiolohia Bay. Additionally, about 6 miles away on the western end of Awalua Bay, you’ll find another shipwreck known as the YO-21 oiler.

While swimming and sunbathing may not be suitable at this beach according to recent visitors, they highly recommend visiting for its scenic hike and stunning views. It’s important to note that there are piles of trash and debris on the shore. If you’re interested in supporting the local ecosystem, it would be great to bring a trash bag and assist in cleaning up. Additionally, if you don’t have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, it’s best not to drive on the sand to avoid getting stuck and requiring a tow.
