Old Sorrel-Weed House

Constructed in 1840, this charming Mediterranean villa showcases the Greek Revival style. Originally owned by Francis Sorrel, a prominent shipping merchant, it later became the childhood home of Brig. Gen. Moxley Sorrel, who valiantly fought during the Civil War. However, the fame of this house extends beyond its historical connections. You might recognize it from the opening scenes of the famous movie “Forrest Gump.” Additionally, it was featured in an episode of HGTV’s intriguing show “Ghost Adventures.” This enchanting villa is renowned as one of Savannah’s most haunted buildings and is a popular destination for ghost enthusiasts on the captivating Savannah ghost tours. Tragically, it is believed that Francis Sorrel’s second wife took her own life within these walls, accompanied by the unfortunate demise of one of his enslaved workers. When visiting the house, guests are offered various options to explore its captivating past: a tour highlighting its rich history and architecture, a fascinating historic walking tour, an eerie ghost tour, or even a spine-tingling “paranormal investigation” experience.
