Enjoy it while visiting St. Augustine in Florida
The Old Jail of St. Augustine was constructed in 1891 to house the city’s lawbreakers. It was funded by Henry Flagler, a prominent figure in the railroad industry. The jail was carefully designed to match the architectural style of the Ancient City, featuring Romanesque Revival design elements. After its closure in 1954, it was repurposed as a historical site for visitors to explore. The property gained recognition and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
Explore the various types of cells used to house inmates, such as maximum-security and solitary confinement areas. It’s intriguing to note that during its active period, the facility also served as a residence for the sheriffs and their families. You can now visit those living quarters as well during the tour.
