One more place to enjoy near Washington, D.C. in District of Columbia
When you’re in town for a quick visit, make sure to include a stop at two iconic landmarks in Washington, D.C.: the Washington Monument and the White House. These magnificent structures, made of marble, represent the United States and are a must-see for anyone visiting the capital city for the first time.
The Washington Monument, which stands at nearly 555 ½ feet, held the title of the world’s tallest structure when it was completed in 1884. Today, you have the opportunity to ride glass-encased elevators to the observation deck at the top. The breathtaking 360-degree views of the city never fail to impress visitors. While you can explore the outside of the monument for free around the clock, National Park Service rangers are only available from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. to answer any questions you may have. The monument itself welcomes visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. To ensure entry, you can reserve free timed-entry tickets up to 30 days in advance through Recreation.gov. Keep in mind that there is a $1 nonrefundable service charge per ticket. Additionally, a limited number of same-day tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The ticket window opens at 8:45 a.m., so expect a queue. For those using public transportation, the Smithsonian Metro stop is the closest to the monument.
