Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests

The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests, also known as the “Land of Many Uses,” cover over 2 million acres in northwestern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming. If you’re looking for a visit, the most frequented areas are located approximately 3 miles east of Steamboat Springs. Buffalo Pass (or Buffs Pass) is a dirt road that runs through the forest, connecting the city to Walden, Colorado. Along this route, you’ll find basic campsites and various opportunities for snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and backcountry skiing. For those interested in hiking, the forest offers popular trails leading to Fish Creek Falls. Another notable spot is Rabbit Ears Pass, named after the ear-shaped buttes visible from there. This area provides trails for biking, hiking, and four-wheel driving. In addition, many exciting snowmobile tours in Colorado pass through these forests.

Visitors in the past highly praised the forest’s well-kept roads, particularly during winter, and were captivated by its beautiful scenery and hiking trails. If you’re interested in snowmobiling, it’s recommended to explore the east side of Rabbit Ears Pass, while the west side is perfect for skiing and snowshoeing. To ensure you don’t lose your way while exploring this vast protected area, make sure to obtain trail maps from the visitors center of the U.S. Forest Service. You can find the center around 3 miles south of downtown Steamboat Springs and less than 2 miles southwest of Steamboat Ski Resort.
