Holzwarth Historic Site

Enjoy it while visiting Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado

Holzwarth Historic Site

Located in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, the Holzwarth Historic Site offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of homesteaders from the 20th century. It focuses specifically on the history of the Holzwarth family, who settled in the Rockies in 1917. To make a living, they engaged in activities such as cutting ice for refrigeration and milling lumber. When Fall River Road (now Old Fall River Road) opened, it brought an influx of travelers to the area. Recognizing this opportunity, the Holzwarth family transformed their property into a dude ranch called the Holzwarth Trout Lodge, which later became the Never Summer Ranch. In 1974, the Nature Conservancy acquired the ranch, eventually transferring ownership to the National Park Service.

When you visit the Holzwarth Historic Site, you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time. The site welcomes you with its old fencing and farm equipment on display at the entrance. It’s conveniently located off Trail Ridge Road, just a short distance from a parking area by the road. From mid-June to Labor Day weekend, you can take tours of the historic site in Rocky Mountain National Park. However, it’s important to note that the buildings may not always be open. Admission to Rocky Mountain National Park grants you free access to the Holzwarth Historic Site. For more information, you can visit the National Park Service’s website.
