Mariposa Grove

Enjoy it while visiting Yosemite National Park in California

Mariposa Grove

In the southernmost part of Yosemite, you’ll find a vast grove of sequoia trees that can only be described as “giant.” Mariposa Grove is one of three groves in the park where visitors can witness these magnificent trees. What sets Mariposa Grove apart is its size. It is home to approximately 500 mature giant sequoias, some of which have been standing for thousands of years. As you explore this area, you’ll come across notable sights like the Fallen Monarch, a massive tree that fell centuries ago, and the Grizzly Giant, estimated to be around 1,800 years old with a circumference of about 90 feet. Another interesting feature is the California Tunnel Tree, the only sequoia in Yosemite that has a manmade tunnel carved through its trunk. If you want to fully appreciate the grandeur of these towering trees, take a hike on one of the many trails available in the area. The trails vary in difficulty, ranging from easy to challenging. The Big Trees Loop Trail is the easiest option, taking about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. This paved trail will lead you past a variety of giant sequoias, including the Fallen Monarch, while informative panels along the route explain the life cycle of these impressive trees.

Visitors who have been here before enthusiastically suggest making the trip, despite the fact that it takes about an hour to drive from Yosemite Valley.
