General Sherman Tree

Visitors are in awe of the General Sherman Tree, which holds the title for being the largest tree in the world based on its volume. Standing tall at 275 feet, with a base diameter exceeding 36 feet, it truly is a sight to behold. However, keep in mind that there might be long queues if you wish to capture a photo next to this majestic tree. To avoid the crowds, it’s recommended to arrive early and be prepared to wait patiently.

There are two trails that travelers can use to reach the tree. The Main Trail is accessible from a parking lot off Wolverton Road, and it’s a half-mile downhill walk to get to the tree. Along the way, you’ll pass through the Giant Forest and see exhibits explaining the history of giant sequoias. Once you’ve taken your photos at the General Sherman Tree, you’ll need to walk back uphill. Although this trail is paved, there are a few steps. If you prefer to avoid the uphill walk, you can continue downhill to the shuttle stop along Generals Highway. The shuttle will take you back to the parking area.

For those using a wheelchair, there is a trail that starts from a parking lot along Generals Highway, which is accessible. From there, it’s a quick trip to the tree. Another option for hiking is the Congress Trail, which is a 2-mile-long paved loop that begins near the General Sherman Tree. Visitors have mentioned that it’s not a difficult hike and provides additional scenic views. Many say it’s definitely worth the experience.
