USS Midway Museum

San Diego, a large military town, has numerous bases scattered throughout the city, particularly around parts of San Diego Bay. Among these sites is the USS Midway, which provides an exclusive glimpse into areas that are typically off-limits to the public. As the longest-serving American aircraft carrier of the 20th century, the USS Midway accommodated over 200,000 sailors during its impressive 47-year service. This historical gem offers visitors a chance to explore around 60 different exhibits and over 30 restored aircraft, some of which participated in significant events like World War II, Operation Desert Storm, and the Korean War. As you embark on a self-guided audio tour, you’ll have the opportunity to visit various sections of the 4-acre flight deck, including the crew’s sleeping quarters, the engine room, and the primary flight control room. Additionally, there are exciting flight simulators, a cozy cafe, and a gift shop for you to enjoy.

Many travelers find the audio guides to be informative, but they highly recommend taking hourlong tours led by knowledgeable volunteer docents. These docents include military veterans, some of whom have served on the ship itself. The USS Midway offers a wealth of things to see and learn, and many visitors reported spending several hours exploring the attraction. Some were so captivated that they stayed the entire day. Even if you’re not particularly interested in history, numerous visitors consider it a must-see. They expressed how the experience made them appreciate both past and present military members for their service. As one of San Diego’s top attractions, it’s advisable to arrive early to avoid long ticket lines and crowds.
