Vikingsholm

A place like no other near Lake Tahoe in California

Vikingsholm

Emerald Bay is distinguished from other state parks by the unique Vikingsholm residence, designed in the Scandinavian castle-style of 1929. The owner, Lora J. Knight, who was not Scandinavian herself, found inspiration in the fjord-like surroundings and commissioned this remarkable architectural creation. To reach this historic landmark, visitors can take a one-mile trail starting from the parking lot on U.S. Highway 89 in Emerald Bay. Alternatively, it is possible to access Vikingsholm by boat.

While exploring Emerald Bay, many visitors highly recommend a visit to the mansion. The guided tours have received numerous positive reviews from those who have experienced them. It’s worth mentioning that the hike to the mansion is quite steep, so it’s advisable to wear suitable footwear for comfort and safety. However, if you prefer an easier route, there is a 1.5-mile hike available from the Eagle Point Campground campfire center.
