Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway

The Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway, also known as Catalina Highway Scenic Drive, is considered one of the most beautiful drives in southeastern Arizona. It is the only paved road that takes travelers to the higher parts of Mount Lemmon and the Santa Catalina Range. This approximately 60-mile round-trip route offers breathtaking views of canyons and mountains. What makes it even more fascinating is that it provides a unique experience of driving through different vegetation zones, similar to going from the deserts of Mexico to the forests of Canada. Starting in the lower Sonoran vegetative life zone, the road gradually ascends to the high forests in the Canadian zone. During the drive, visitors can enhance their understanding of the area by making a stop at the Palisades Visitor Center.

A drive to Tucson is highly recommended by recent visitors. They describe it as a “spectacular” and “must-do” experience. Not only does it offer a stunning vantage point, but it also provides relief from the desert heat. As you climb higher along the byway, travelers mentioned that the temperature drops. Make sure to bring a picnic and take advantage of the scenic overlooks and rest areas along the way, as suggested by previous visitors.
