Desert View Watchtower

The Desert View Watchtower is situated on the South Rim, approximately 23 miles to the east of Grand Canyon Village via Desert View Drive (near the park’s east entrance). It was designed by a well-known architect named Mary Colter in 1932. The tower was constructed using local stones and was positioned right on the edge of the canyon. To capture the essence of the original Ancestral Puebloan buildings found in the Colorado Plateau, Colter explored various sites throughout the Southwest. Inside the tower, visitors can explore the Kiva Room, which offers a cozy fireplace, a resting area, a gift shop, and stunning views of the canyon. During the busy season, talented local artisans showcase their skills in the Kiva Room, providing an opportunity for visitors to observe the creation of jewelry, pottery, rugs, and other crafts several days a week.

The east side of the Grand Canyon has become a favorite among recent travelers due to fewer crowds. Visitors were particularly drawn to the tower’s intricate architecture, finding it captivating and aesthetically pleasing. It is worth mentioning that the tower is well-preserved and maintained. Nonetheless, a few travelers expressed their disappointment at not being able to climb the tower.
