One more place to enjoy near Anchorage in Alaska
Situated approximately 95 miles northeast of Anchorage, the magnificent Matanuska Glacier captivates visitors along the picturesque Glenn Highway. As the largest glacier in Alaska that can be reached by car, it holds a special allure. This ancient glacier stretches across an impressive 4 miles and reaches heights of 13,000 feet, making it a prominent sight easily visible from the highway. Consequently, many travelers choose to make a stop here and marvel at its grandeur.
At the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site, visitors can take a break and admire the glacier. It’s a great spot for a picnic, and there’s a short trail to explore. You can park for free for up to 30 minutes, but if you stay longer, there’s a $5 charge. If you want to actually walk on the glacier, you’ll need to head to Glacier Park, a privately owned area that requires an admission fee. Trust me, it’s worth it! Walking on the frozen surface and discovering ice caves and deep blue pools is an incredible experience. For safety reasons, only certified vendors are allowed to guide hikes on the glacier. Luckily, there are several companies in Anchorage that offer year-round transportation and guided hikes. Salmon Berry Travel & Tours is one such company with excellent reviews. The prices for guided hikes or climbing vary depending on the level of experience, ranging from $40 to $300 per person. Previous visitors who have taken these guided treks have had a fantastic time and enjoyed the insightful “Glaciology 101” information shared by the knowledgeable guides.
