In the 1940s, as Anchorage began to expand, air travel became more popular in and out of the city. Commercial and private planes filled the skies around Anchorage, so it was necessary to have separate landing areas. To address this, the state of Alaska connected two local lakes, Spenard and Hood, with a channel. This allowed small aircraft to use the water for floating during the summer. By the 1950s, a seaplane complex, a new gravel airstrip, and an air control tower were constructed. The constant activity of planes arriving and departing became one of Anchorage’s most distinctive characteristics.
