String Lake

One more place to enjoy near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming

String Lake

During your visit to Grand Teton in the warm months, make sure to take a break and cool off in the beautiful turquoise waters of String Lake. This swimming area is situated in the middle of the park, just above Jenny Lake and below Leigh Lake. Although the water might be a bit cold due to the glacier feed, it’s a great place to refresh yourself after a day of hiking. String Lake is perfect for families as it has shallow waters and a soft sandy floor. While relaxing on the shoreline, you can also enjoy stunning views of the Tetons. If you’re up for some more adventure, the nearby String Lake Trailhead gives you access to the String Lake Loop. It’s an easy-to-moderate trail that goes around the lake for 3.8 miles, offering excellent panoramas. Previous hikers have preferred this trail over the Jenny Lake Loop because it’s less crowded.

Feel free to bring your kayaks or other nonmotorized water sports equipment to use in the lake. Just make sure to obtain a permit online before your visit or get one at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center or the Colter Bay Visitor Center. Please note that there are no rental options available at the lake. Due to the beach area near the parking lot being quite crowded, some visitors suggest walking a bit further around the bend to find a more secluded beach area. You’ll find designated picnic areas and restrooms near the parking lot for your convenience. To reach the parking area, drive along Teton Park Road and turn at the North Jenny Lake Junction. Keep in mind that the $35 park entrance fee covers access to String Lake as well.
