Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Hilton Head may not have a zoo, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience its wildlife. One great place to observe the island’s native animals in their natural environment is the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge spans 4,053 acres and includes various islands like Pinckney Island, Corn Island, Big and Little Harry Islands, Buzzard Island, as well as several small hammocks. Out of these, Pinckney Island is the only one accessible to the public. Despite this limitation, there are plenty of activities available for you to enjoy.

Pinckney offers visitors a delightful experience with its 14 miles of picturesque hiking and biking trails. These trails wind their way through beautiful freshwater ponds, salt marshes, and enchanting maritime forests. As you explore this natural haven, keep your eyes peeled for the incredible diversity of birdlife, with the refuge serving as home to an impressive 250 species. You may also have the chance to encounter alligators, turtles, deer, and other fascinating wildlife. Keep a special lookout for the elegant white ibis and, if you’re visiting in the summer, the vibrant multicolored painted bunting, a species that is unfortunately at risk of endangerment.
