Trip ideas while visiting Hilton Head in South Carolina
Discover the intriguing past of Hilton Head by exploring Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. This special place holds great significance as it was the first self-governed community in America for formerly enslaved individuals, often referred to as a freedmen’s town. General Ormsby Mitchel established Mitchelville in 1862, providing refuge for escaped enslaved people from nearby plantations. In this remarkable town, they built homes, churches, stores, schools, and even developed a well-organized road system. The residents took charge of their destiny by creating their own government and electing officials. They also made education a priority by implementing a compulsory education law for all children aged 6 to 15, making Mitchelville the first town in South Carolina to do so.
Today, the local Gullah community, who are direct descendants of the original Mitchelville residents, diligently work to preserve their ancestors’ history and traditions. One remarkable event that celebrates the rich cultural contributions of the Gullah people is the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration. Held annually in February, this renowned celebration not only honors the Gullah heritage but also boosts tourism during the island’s quietest month of the year.
Park exhibits at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park offer a glimpse into the past with various replicas and installations. You can explore the Praise House, Homestead House, Bateau, tool shed, and Mitchelville’s Bench by the Road, which pays tribute to the settlement of Mitchelville along Beach City Road. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to discover the traditional art of net casting.
Throughout the year, the park hosts a range of events that bring history to life. One such occasion is the annual Juneteenth celebration, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States. In December, you can experience the magic of a drive-through holiday lights show.
In an effort to educate the public about Mitchelville’s history and attract more tourists to the park, The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa has a special exhibit on the second floor. This gallery features over 20,000 artifacts, including photographs, letters, and documents from original Mitchelville residents. Best of all, admission to this gallery is free for everyone.
