Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is a charming destination for those who prefer natural and romantic gardens, in contrast to the meticulously maintained gardens of Middleton Place. Here, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of camellias and azaleas during the early spring season, as well as encounter diverse wildlife throughout the year. Be captivated by the presence of alligators, herons, and turtles at the Audubon Swamp Garden. If you’re a bird enthusiast, don’t miss the chance to spot local birds at the waterfowl refuge. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are several trails where you can hop on your bike or take a leisurely stroll along the Ashley River path, which offers shade from the elegant live oak trees. Additionally, it’s highly recommended to spend an hour exploring the interior of the house. Families with children will find the Wildlife Center and nature center particularly enjoyable.

The plantation has a rich historical background connected to slavery, despite its attractive appearance. From 1850 until the late 20th century, it served as the residence for many enslaved families who lived in the four cabins on the property. These cabins have been carefully preserved and serve as visual representations of different significant periods in history. To provide insight into the lives of those who were compelled to live and work on the plantation, there is a 45-minute tour called “From Slavery to Freedom” that visitors can take. The tour includes a visit to the cabins and offers an opportunity to learn more about African American history. Recent visitors have praised the knowledgeable and well-prepared tour guides, and the best part is that the tour is included in the general admission ticket price.
