Drayton Hall

Drayton Hall, a plantation house dating back to 1738, is a remarkable example of Palladian architecture and holds the distinction of being the first and finest representation of this style in America. As you explore the red-brick main house, take note of its intricate decorative windows and doors, carefully designed for perfect balance. Interestingly, Drayton Hall has retained much of its original charm over the years, with no modern amenities such as air conditioning, electricity, or heating. Before embarking on a self-guided 45-minute audio tour, which is included in the admission price, visitors are encouraged to watch an orientation video. This immersive experience provides valuable insights into the lives of enslaved people who worked on the plantation. Previous guests highly praised the audio tour for shedding light on the daily struggles faced by these workers, and they also appreciated the knowledgeable staff members who shared additional information about the plantation’s history.

Explore the scenic walking trails that run alongside the Ashley River and the marsh after your tour. Take a moment to honor those laid to rest at the African American Cemetery located on the premises. Additionally, don’t forget to visit the Gates Gallery, where you can view archaeological artifacts and items belonging to the Drayton family.
