The national forest is a historic place, being one of the earliest in the country. It was established using some of the land that used to be part of the Biltmore Estate. Not only does it have the distinction of being home to the first forestry school in the United States, but it also boasts the presence of the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute and Mount Mitchell. Mount Mitchell holds the honor of being the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
