Snorkel at Captain Cook Monument

In 1874, a memorial called the Captain Cook Monument was built to honor the place where Captain Cook passed away. This 27-foot tall obelisk marks the location where he lost his life during a clash between Hawaiians and Westerners in 1779. You can find this monument standing proudly on the shores of Kealakekua Bay.

Snorkeling at this location is very popular nowadays. It can be accessed through different means such as a boat tour, kayak, or by hiking the steep Ka’awaloa Trail. People who have been here before described the snorkeling experience as “amazing” and compared the variety of fish to what you would see in an aquarium. However, they advised that the 4-mile round-trip hike is quite challenging due to an elevation change of approximately 1,400 feet. If you decide to hike, make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, apply sunscreen (as there is little to no shade along the trail), and bring enough water. Don’t forget to bring your own snorkeling equipment and water shoes as well.
