Punalu'u Black Sand Beach

A place like no other near Hawaii - The Big Island in Hawaii

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

Punalu’u, located in southern Hawai’i (more specifically in Ka’u), is a beach that offers more than just swimming due to its rough and rocky waters. Its main attraction lies in the opportunity for picturesque photography. The distinct onyx color of the sand found here is a result of the ongoing volcanic activity of Kilauea in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Additionally, this beach is frequently visited by honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtles, which can be seen swimming and sunbathing on the shore. On occasion, you may even spot a hawksbill sea turtle.

Many previous visitors were amazed by Punalu’u beach. They happily mentioned that there is ample parking available for free. However, they did advise caution as the black sand at the beach tends to become quite hot.
