Pololu Valley Lookout

If you’re searching for another option to visit instead of the Waipi’o Valley Overlook (which is now not recommended for tourists), you might want to consider the equally stunning Pololu Valley Lookout. Situated in North Kohala, this lookout offers awe-inspiring views of the Pacific Ocean, the beautiful and green Pololu Valley, and the northeastern coast of the island. To reach the lookout, you’ll need to take Highway 270, which leads directly to it. Once you arrive, there is a small parking lot available. To increase your chances of finding a parking spot, it’s advisable to follow the advice of recent travelers and arrive early, preferably before 9 a.m.

If you’re up for some adventure, there’s a trail called Pololu Trail that takes you to a black sand beach by the ocean. It’s about half a mile long and can be quite steep in some parts. While swimming isn’t recommended due to strong currents, many people who have visited in the past say that the hike itself is worth it just for the breathtaking views. In fact, some even claim that the views from the trail are better than those from the lookout point. Remember to wear proper hiking shoes and bring enough water if you decide to go on this hike.
