Kealakekua Bay

A place like no other near Hawaii - The Big Island in Hawaii

Kealakekua Bay

Kealakekua, located on Hawai’i’s west coast, is a popular spot for snorkelers. They are drawn to this secluded bay because of the vibrant marine life that can be easily seen through the clear and tranquil waters. The bay is home to an array of tropical fish, as well as majestic sea turtles and playful Hawaiian spinner dolphins. However, Kealakekua also holds great significance for history enthusiasts who venture here.

In January 1779, the bay was discovered by Capt. James Cook, a British explorer who also stayed there as a guest. Unfortunately, just a few weeks later, tensions escalated, and he lost his life on the same shore. While enjoying your snorkeling and scuba diving adventures, be sure to take a moment to appreciate the prominent Captain Cook Monument, which stands proudly on the opposite side of the bay. Additionally, you’ll find a traditional religious site known as Hikiau Heiau across the bay.
