A place like no other near Hawaii - The Big Island in Hawaii
In Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, you can find two active volcanoes: Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Among the two, Kilauea is considered a “must-see.” Standing at 4,000 feet tall, this volcano has been active since January 3, 1983. In 2018, it erupted in the Puna District residential area, causing the destruction of over 700 homes. The most recent eruption occurred on January 5, 2023, but it has currently paused since March 7, 2023. To stay informed about the latest updates on trails, safety measures, and lava flow status, make sure to check in at the Kilauea Visitor Center. Kilauea is highly recommended by many visitors to Hawai’i, who often find it impressive regardless of whether there is active lava flowing.
Although Kilauea steals the spotlight, let’s not forget about Mauna Loa, also known as Long Mountain. While it may not be as famous, this volcano stands tall at a height of 13,681 feet and is occasionally covered in snow. Even if you’re busy exploring Kilauea, you’ll still catch glimpses of majestic Mauna Loa throughout the park. So take a moment to capture a photo from a distance, even if you don’t have the chance to get up close and personal.
