One more place to enjoy near Sanibel Island in Florida
The Sanibel Lighthouse has been serving its purpose since 1884 by lighting the entrance into San Carlos Bay. This beloved landmark on Sanibel Island’s eastern tip is now almost 140 years old but has suffered some damage. During Hurricane Ian in September 2022, one of its legs was sheared off at the bottom. However, the leg has been located and is currently undergoing repairs. Despite this setback, the lighthouse stands as a resilient symbol for the island. Unfortunately, the two charming historic homes that once housed the lighthouse keepers were swept away. The recreational area surrounding the lighthouse, which offers stunning views of both the gulf and bay, is temporarily closed with no confirmed reopening date.
Sanibel Island offers more than just a lighthouse. Within its 32-acre area, you’ll find a well-established beach that attracts various groups of people. Windsurfers, anglers, and families all enjoy this beach for different reasons. It provides convenient amenities such as a picnic area, grills, shaded pavilions, restrooms, showers, a fishing pier on the bay side, and a nature trail for those looking to explore. If you plan to drive, parking is available for a fee of $5 per hour. However, cyclists and pedestrians can access the beach for free.
