Spiegel Grove

Spiegel Grove

In June 2002, a retired Navy ship named the USS Spiegel Grove was purposefully sunk near Key Largo’s coast to create an artificial reef and promote the thriving of marine life. This massive ship, measuring 510 feet, holds the distinction of being one of the largest vessels ever intentionally submerged for this ecological purpose. Not long after its sinking, the Spiegel Grove quickly became a haven for various fish species and other marine organisms.

In the present day, the wreck benefits both the environment and the diving community. It has become a popular dive site for many reviewers due to its distinctive characteristics and the presence of vibrant fish. However, due to its enormous size and position as an artificial reef (the ship settled upside down in 2005 following Hurricane Dennis, with its deepest point being 130 feet), instructors advise that only experienced divers should explore the Spiegel Grove. Certain sections of the ship are deemed too hazardous, even for certified divers with advanced qualifications.
