Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

Almost a millennium ago, an eruption occurred, giving birth to Sunset Crater. This volcanic event dramatically changed the surrounding landscape, creating a unique terrain filled with cinders, lava rock, and flowing lava. Amidst this almost surreal scenery, towering ponderosa pines stand as a testament to nature’s resilience. To fully immerse yourself in the park’s wonders, there are several enjoyable activities to try. Embark on a 1-mile adventure along the Lava Flow Trail, where you can witness the remnants of the volcanic activity up close. Alternatively, make your way to the Cinder Hills Overlook for a breathtaking view from above. Remember that for the sake of preservation, hiking off designated trails is not permitted.

Walking on lava rocks and cinders is an experience that leaves visitors in awe. They often describe it as “dramatic” and “incredible.” In fact, some visitors wish they could get even closer to the crater.
